Overview

  • Primary function - Fire Suppression/Emergency Medical Service.
  • Typical work day - In addition to normal Fire & EMS operations, a Firefighter will maintain the station, vehicles, and equipment, attend training classes & drills, be assigned special details such as station tours, hydrant inspection and building pre-fire planning.
  • Hours & work conditions - Shifts are 24 hours in a three Unit rotation.
  • Firefighters receive paid vacations, sick leave, medical & dental insurance, and an excellent pension program. The Department operates under a semi-military style rank & supervision structure.
  • Equipment, tools and materials used - Firefighters use a wide range of tools and equipment to perform their duties providing Life Safety Protection through Fire Suppression and Emergency Medical Service. Everything from a rag or mop to a half million dollar ladder truck.

Requirements

  • Training & Education - Associates Degree in Fire Science, Completion of Fire Fighter I & II (certification), State Licensed Paramedic.
  • Current entry level physical agility and written testing done at Schoolcraft College.
  • Physically able to perform the job.
