FIRE PREVENTION - OPERATIONAL
SMOKE DETECTORS SAVE LIVES!
Arabic Translation

On December 27, 1999 at 10:30 a.m. in an East Dearborn
neighborhood, 11 residents kept their lives because of operational
smoke detectors.
According to data obtained from our fire reporting system,
only one in four residential homes have operational smoke detectors.
That means three out of four residential homes are in violation of Dearborn
ordinance Section 11-85/Smoke Detectors:
Each apartment, suite or sleeping area of every single
or multiple dwelling unit shall be provided with a minimum of one smoke
detector capable of sensing visible or invisible products of combustion.
The detector shall be approved or listed by a recognized independent
testing laboratory and, when actuated, shall provide an alarm suitable
to warn the occupants within the individual dwelling unit. A minimum
of one smoke detector shall be located in the immediate area of all
sleeping quarters.
The importance of not only having smoke detectors but
also making sure they are operational cannot be stressed enough!
We are working hard to promote the installation of smoke detectors and
the installation of new batteries twice a year (when we change our clocks
ahead in the spring and back in the fall). Smoke detectors wear out
and they should be replaced with a new detector every 10 years.
Smoke detectors are available, while supplies last,
at Fire Headquarters, 3750 Greenfield. The following information is
requested:
- Zip Code
- How many children live in the household?
- How many senior citizens live in the household?
- Is the residential property private or a multi-unit?
- Upon receiving a smoke detector, remember to read all
instructions before installation and save the manual for future reference.
Our Goal is 100% Compliancy in Dearborn!
