Investigation upgraded in General Motors Sedan Case
"Bloomberg News" reported in December 2002 that some 2.3 million General Motors (GM) sedans are being examined more closely for possible causes of engine fires.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the probe, which started in June 2002, has been upgraded and includes 1996 through 2000 models of the following vehicles: Buick Le Sabre, Park Avenue, Regal and Riviera; Chevrolet Monte Carlo; Oldsmobile 88, 98 and Cutlass; and Pontiac Bonneville and Grand Prix.
The associated Press (AP) reported that NHTSA representatives said fires could result if the engine backfires during start-up and fractures the plastic intake manifold, NHTSA and GM have received more than 650 complaints about the problem.
