Can an attorney employed by the City of Dearborn represent me in court, prepare a legal document (will, deed, etc.), or give me legal advice on a specific legal issue?
No, the Dearborn City Charter provides that an attorney employed by the city shall only provide legal services for the City of Dearborn.
Does the City of Dearborn sell homes?
No, the City does not sell homes. The City does however sell vacant lots through a bidding process.
I am interested in buying a vacant piece of property may I purchase it?
1) Check with the City Assessor to determine who pays the taxes. If it is privately owned, you must contact that person.
2) If the City owns the property, you must submit a written request to the Department of Law stating that you are interested in purchasing the property. You must include the property address or property Tax ID#, your name, address and phone number.
The branches from my neighbors tree (bush, tomato plant, etc.) are growing over onto my property. What can I do?
Legally, your property line extends straight up into the air. Therefore, anything hanging over your property line is yours. This means that you can cut tree branches, trim bushes, and harvest tomatoes.
I am having problems with my landlord/tenant. What are my rights?
The Department of Law cannot give specific legal advice for specific legal problems. Click here for a link to a Landlord/Tenant Handbook. The Department of Law does have pamphlets addressing almost every issue that arises in the landlord/tenant relationship. A citizen may pick one up in the Law Department or call 943-2035 and one will be mailed.
How much money can I sue for in Small Claims Court?
You can sue for up to $3,000 plus costs. Small Claims matters are handled at the 19th District Court. Questions regarding Small Claims matters can best be answered by calling (313) 943-2342.
I have been charged with a felony. Can I talk to the prosecutor handling the case?
The Law Department handles only misdemeanor prosecutions (shoplifting, drunk driving, etc.). Felonies are handled by the Wayne County Prosecutor's Office, 224-5777
Can I take my dog to the neighborhood park and let him play?
No. Dogs are not allowed in city parks. It does not matter if they are leashed or unleashed.
How can I obtain documents from the City?

I would like to make a complaint about my neighbor but I want to remain anonymous. Can I do that?
Yes, you can do that, but if you are the only witness to the violation, it is impossible to prosecute. All complaints, anonymous or not, are referred to the appropriate City Department for investigation.
