Assessor, Gary Evanko
Gary Evanko is professionally certified at the highest level, Level Four Certified Assessor, by the Michigan State Assessors Board; holds a Certified Personal Property Examiner by the Michigan State Tax Commission; and is a Certified General Appraiser by the Board of Real Estate Appraisers.
Evanko began his career over 35 years ago doing mass appraisal field work for United Appraisal Company. From there, he continued as an appraiser for the Livingston County Equalization Department and rose to the position of Deputy Equalization Director. Continuing on in his chosen career path, he performed full assessing responsibilities with Hamburg Township and Putnam (Pickney) Township.
In 1980, Mr. Evanko participated in the Dearborn Revaluation Project as Director of Field Operations. In this capacity, he was primarily responsible for the data collection portion of the mass reappraisal of the City of Dearborn.
In 1981, Gary Evanko was appointed Director of the Department of Assessment and was responsible for all operations concerning the assessment administration and property taxation of 35,000 plus parcels of property having a 1993 SEV of $3.166 billion. Other duties and responsibilities included service to the Mayor of Dearborn and various economic development projects and activities.
In 1993, he became the Director of the Wayne County Assessment & Equalization Division thus being responsible for all division operations, including varying levels of assessment services for 38 of 43 Wayne County communities and serving as the certifying assessor for 21 municipalities.
Evanko was promoted to Deputy Chief Financial Officer for the Wayne County Department of Management and Budget in 2007 having direct and oversight responsibilities involving property assessment, equalization and property tax matters, as well as providing special assistance to Chief Financial Officer concerning budget and other administrative matters.
Evanko was the 2004 President of the Michigan Assessors Association; 1992-93 President of the Southeast Michigan Assessors Association, 1987-88 and 1996-1997 President of the Wayne County Association of Assessing Officers and a former Finance and Taxation Committee Member of the Michigan Municipal League. He received the 1991 Frank Moss Literary Award, 1999 Most Valuable Member Award and the 2000 Distinguished Assessment Jurisdiction Award from the Michigan Assessors Association
Gary Evanko is married to Linda. He has four children and three grandchildren to keep him busy in his spare time.
Gary Evanko was appointed Director of the Department of Assessment in September of 2009. He brings along with him experience in all levels of local government; township, city and county. He has held leadership rolls in several professional assessor organizations including the Michigan Assessors Association, Southeast Michigan Assessors Association, and the Wayne County Association of Assessing Officers and has received a number of professional awards.
