IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT SANITATION SERVICES

Information about the many services provided by the Department of Public Works can be found in the City Calendar and on the city’s website. Guide to Public Works.

Representatives from the department are available from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays to answer questions from residents and businesses. For information about trash, recycling and yard waste, you may call 313.943.2085.

Shown below are some common requests for information that we receive:

    1. What day is my trash collected? Call 943.2085 or For More Information Click Here

    2. Is there a special pick-up fee for what I need to throw out? Call 943.2085

    3. How can I dispose of latex paint? Let it dry out, remove lid and place at curb with trash

    4. How much does a replacement recycle bin cost? $10 with delivery, or $8 if you pick-up

    5. When is yard waste season? Mid-March through December 31

    6. What is yard waste? Grass clippings, weeds, leaves, shrub and brush trimmings.

    7. Can I put yard waste in plastic bags or cardboard boxes? No. Use paper landscape bags or 32 gallon containers with a yard waste sticker on the lid.

    8. Where can I get more yard waste stickers? City libraries, Ford Community and Performing Arts Center, City Hall, or Public Works. Stickers can be mailed to your home at no charge upon request.

Please be aware of the following rules and limitations regarding sanitation services:

  1. The city has an expanded trash program whereby residents can put out up to five large items along with their household trash each week for pick up on their regular trash day. The city no longer conducts an annual Rubbish Amnesty program.

  2. The city does not operate a drop-off facility licensed to accept trash or yard waste. In some cases, Veolia Environmental Services (313.436.8333, 3051 Schaefer Road) may accept such materials for a charge.

  3. The city operates a small drop-off center only for recyclables (2951 Greenfield Road) for residents that do not receive curbside service (typically apartment residents).

  4. The City conducts one Household Hazardous Waste Drop-off Day each year in May or June. Check the city calendar for the exact date, or call 943.2085. This service is free to Dearborn residents (proof of residency required).

  5. Wayne County also sponsors household hazardous waste days (734.326.3936).

  6. Special pick-up charges may apply for large amounts of trash, brush/branches that are not bundled or over five feet in length, or pick-ups other than on your regular day. The minimum special pick-up fee is $50.

  7. The city does not pick up trash/yard waste/recyclables from private property. Materials must be placed properly at the curb for collection.

  8. The City does not replace stolen or misplaced trash cans or recycle bins.

Problems related to trash or debris on private property, improper trash storage, rodents, or tall grass and weeds are handled by the Building and Safety Department (313.943.2161).
