Youths can learn about law enforcement
careers by joining Dearborn Police Explorer Post

The Dearborn Police Explorer Post
accepts the First Place Trophy for Crime Scene Investigation at the
2004 National Exploring Competition.
Young people who are interested in learning
more about possible careers in law enforcement are invited to apply
to join the Dearborn Police Department’s Explorer Post.
“This is a great opportunity for teenagers, and even those in
their early 20s, to get a better understanding of what working as a
police officer entails,” explained Corporal Jerry Blevins, one
of the Post’s advisors. “Our members learn a lot of different
skill sets, and get to participate in a lot of different activities.
It’s a well-rounded experience for anyone who’s thinking
about law enforcement as a possible career.”
Established in 1967, the Explorer Post is open to people ages 15 through
21 years old, or 14-year-olds who are in the ninth grade. Applicants
must meet the following criteria:
- Must be working towards a minimum GPA of 2.5, and
must maintain at least a 2.5 GPA once achieving it.
- Reasonably good physical and mental health.
- No negative contacts with law enforcement.
- Any applicant or member who has a driver’s license
must maintain a valid driver’s license.
Post meetings are held every Tuesday evening from 7 to
9 p.m.
Explorer members experience opportunities to receive some of the training
that sworn police officers do, such as firearms training, defensive
tactics, report writing and leadership skills.
