The Dearborn Housing Commission participates in the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher program. The Section 8 Voucher program is funded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). As of 2014, the Housing Commission administers 96 Vouchers (50 vouchers designated for handicapped/disabled and 46 vouchers designated for "families" and seniors).
Participation in the Section 8 Voucher program begins with the application for assistance. If a waiting list is "closed" the Housing Commission is prohibited from accepting new applicants.
Once applications are received, applicants are entered into the waiting list database for assistance and applications are generally processed in the order of date and time they are received.
When selected from the waiting list, applications are reviewed to determine eligibility. Eligible applicants are issued a Housing Choice "Voucher" and begin looking for suitable rental housing in the private rental market.
Voucher program participants will generally pay approximately 30 percent of their monthly income to the landlord and the remainder of the agreed upon monthly contract rent is paid by the Housing Commission.
Participants are re-certified for eligibility annually and rental units are inspected regularly to ensure that the subsidized unit meets current Housing Quality Standards as determined by HUD.
